Some days, leadership looks like strategy meetings, big ideas, and powerful decisions.
Other days, it looks like brushing tears off your cheek just fast enough to join a Zoom call.
I’ve led through breakups, grief, anxiety, and the kind of quiet heartbreak that doesn’t come with bereavement leave or sick days. I’ve shown up while losing someone I loved. While holding a pet who was more than a pet. While wondering how I was going to make it through the week without falling apart in front of my team.
And still, there were people who needed me.
Projects that didn’t pause.
Questions that had to be answered.
So I filled their cups with an empty one.
This post isn’t about how strong I am.
It’s not about pushing through at all costs.
It’s about the unspoken reality of leadership. When you’re asked to be steady while you’re anything but.
Emotional boundaries at work are necessary.
But they can also be incredibly lonely.
You can care deeply about your team and still go home feeling like no one sees you.
If you’re there now, in the middle of your own quiet unraveling, this is for you.
You’re not broken. You’re human.
You’re still leading.
Still worthy.
Still enough.
Even when you’re running on empty.
Especially then.
